Distal ruptures of the pectoralis major are an increasingly common injury, very often linked to a weight-training accident during bench-press exercises.
Treatment is often surgical, because the torn tendon retracts and optimal healing on its own is therefore impossible.
These injuries cause a marked loss of strength, particularly in adduction and internal rotation — often poorly tolerated by young, athletic patients — and an unsightly deformity of the anterior axillary wall.
They are poorly recognised by physicians and surgeons alike, and are widely under-diagnosed.
This is explained by certain anatomical particularities of the tendon that we have demonstrated in our anatomical scientific publications.
These injuries can be successfully operated on, sometimes even several years after the rupture, because the muscle remains functional.

When you visit the Centre du Grand Pectoral, you will be seen by Dr Renaud Guiu, sports physician and ultrasound specialist, who will assess the severity of the injury and whether surgical repair is possible.
At the end of the visit, a consultation report will be provided for your own doctor.
If you wish, you can be seen the same day by Dr Charles Schlur, orthopaedic surgeon specialising in the shoulder, who has extensive expertise in managing these injuries.
